Anticipating Crossover Day

"Crossover Day serves as a crucial milestone in the session as its final opportunity for bills and resolutions to pass out of their respective chambers and remain eligible to become law."

- Representative Charlice Byrd

The Georgia House of Representatives continues to work at a fast and furious pace since crossover day is Thursday, March 6th. Crossover Day serves as a crucial milestone in the session as its final opportunity for bills and resolutions to pass out of their respective chambers and remain eligible to become law. But keep in mind, for every bill signed into law takes away someone’s right whether you agree with it or not.

There are also lots of visitors during this time… Scout Day, Georgia Republican Women Day, Realtors Day, Reinhardt Day, Pastor’s Day just to name a few.

The House voted on several bills and resolutions – the most of any week so far. I will highlight a few notable pieces of legislation that passed.

HB 108. This bill is Safeguarding American Veteran Empowerment Act (SAVE Act), which would provide various protections for veterans applying for veteran’s benefits, while also encouraging free-market business practices.

HB 171. This bill would address the growing concern surrounding computer-generated obscene material involving children. As technology evolves, so do the ways in which individuals may exploit and potentially harm children, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing an increasingly prominent role and creates a new criminal offense for the distribution, solicitation, or possession with the intent to distribute obscene computed generated material that depicts a child.

HB 267. This bill is known as the Riley Gaines Act. The bill would codify into law that males and females must participate, encompassing both K-12 and post-secondary, in the athletics designated for their sex as assigned at birth by their biology. This includes the facilities and overnight accommodations.

HB 428. This bill would codify the right to in vitro fertilization (IVF) in our state’s law.
